Why does Hair Loss occur?

Male pattern baldness, medically known as androgenetic alopecia, is the most common type of hair loss in men. It's characterized by a receding hairline and thinning of the hair on the crown and temples, often resulting in a distinctive pattern that resembles the letter 'M' or 'U'. This condition affects a significant number of men and can start as early as the teenage years, with the likelihood increasing with age.

1. Genetics
Genetics play a crucial role in determining an individual's likelihood of developing male pattern baldness. This genetic predisposition is inherited and can involve multiple genes. It's common for men to look to their family history on both the maternal and paternal sides to gauge their potential risk. If a man's close relatives, such as his father or grandfathers, have experienced male pattern baldness, his own risk of developing the condition is significantly higher. This genetic influence primarily affects the sensitivity of hair follicles to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of testosterone, which leads to the thinning and eventual loss of hair.

2. Age
Age is a significant factor in the development of male pattern baldness. While the condition can begin as early as the late teens or early twenties, the likelihood of experiencing hair loss increases with age. By the age of 50, approximately 50% of men show signs of male pattern baldness to some degree. The progression of hair loss over time varies from person to person, with some experiencing a rapid loss at an early age and others witnessing a gradual thinning over many years.

3. Hormones

Hormone play a pivotal role in male pattern baldness, with dihydrotestosterone (DHT) being the main hormone involved. DHT is converted from testosterone by the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase and binds to receptors on hair follicles, causing them to shrink and the hair growth cycle to shorten. Over time, the affected hair follicles produce thinner, shorter hairs, and eventually, the growth of new hairs stops. The sensitivity of hair follicles to DHT is determined by genetics, but the hormonal changes themselves are a normal part of aging for men.
